Students Who Are Challenged By Learning Problems

This group includes students who struggle to process information.  These difficulties can cause frustration and even depression.  Students with learning problems can have difficulty reading and frequently don’t like to read.  They can have problems understanding and remembering what they read.  They can have trouble following directions and find it difficult to concentrate.

Writing can also be difficult, even the physical act of putting words down on paper.  Some students with learning problems have a tough time with grammar and spelling.  There may be problems with handwriting.  It can be a struggle for students to express ideas on paper, even when they are clear in their minds.

Time management can be hard, too.  It can take longer for some students with learning problems to complete School can be a roller coasterassignments.  Sometimes they may find it difficult to stay focused on lectures and take notes.

Do you suspect you might have a learning problem?  If you do, we strongly recommend that you ask to be evaluated.  The evaluation is confidential and free.  It is your right to have it, and it's relatively painless.  If nothing else, you will know.  At Cabrillo, evaluations are CONDUCTED by the highly skilled and friendly staff at DISABLED STUDENT PROGRAMS AND SERVICES.  If you would like an evaluation, we suggest you ask a Writing Center tutor to take you over to make an appointment.  If this isn't comfortable, drop into DSP&S yourself or ask an academic counselor for help.  If you have a learning problem that has already been diagnosed, are you using the accommodations you have been taught?  Have you checked in with the Learning Skills Program and Disabled Student Programs and Services to let the specialists know that you are here and might need their help?  If it has been several years since your first evaluation, you might want to consider a second evaluation or at least a visit with a specialist. If nothing else, we suggest you scan the schedule of classes under Learning Skills for courses and labs that could help you succeed as a student.
