Prewriting and Planning

Before you begin writing anything formal, be it a college assignment, a letter to your landlord, or an email to your supervisor, you should take some time to plan out what you intend to say. Your experience with the topic, the amount you need to write, and the assignment or purpose for writing will all dictate how much time you spend planning and what technique you use to approach the task at hand. Below are some common strategies to begin planning your draft; use each one for a different assignment until you discover the methods that work best for you.
