Time management is one of the most important skills necessary for success in college. Because English 290 is an independent lab, it is up to YOU to attend the lab for two hours per week and use the time to learn and practice new writing and proofreading TECHNIQUES with a tutor. In your first tutorial visit, a lab assistant will interview you to find out your English 255 instructor (if you're taking 255) and your writing goals for the semester. You will also be asked to write a short (20-30 minute) statement about your classes this semester and your reasons for taking English 290. This will help us to coordinate your individual lab assignments.
As part of your lab orientation, you will be asked to read about the English
290 course content and policies. While you are not required to set up a regular
appointment or to attend the same hours every week, we do recommend these
measures for students with full schedules. That way, it becomes part of your
regular routine.
Some students will choose to spend more time in the lab when they are developing specific assignments in their English 255 and other Cabrillo classes, which will change during the semester. Regardless of how you plan to schedule your English 290 lab time, it is essential to begin each semester with a clear plan for your class, work, and home schedules.
To get started, print out the Weekly Schedule, Monthly Schedule, and Study Planner that are linked right here as a "pdf" file. This should be no problem if you do it on-campus; if you're at home, you'll need Adobe Reader software (which you can download free here).
