Assignment #6
CABT 160
Activity #A

In class, you will be given a printout to use in viewing and identifying file types and the software to view, use, activate or make them.

Done self-paced in class. I'll give you the handout. Click here for a Word version of the Activity #A exercise.

Setting Up a Website

In this assignment we will download files and software that we can use to build a simple website and, later, possibly upload the website and all files to a server. Done in class alnog with instructor led lecture and demo.

Activity #1 - A website is a collection of files (html pages and graphics) arranged in folders and "hosted" on an Internet computer called a server. The server and the files are retrieved (served) from the server when a computer user uses a client computer (one that is temporarily logged onto the Internet) to type a URL address into a browser window (software like I.E. or Firefox) to ask the server for the websites home page.

Make a set of folders to hold the website and pages you will make in Assignments 7 & 8

Directions - on the desktop:
  • Make 2 folders called: (in class demo)
  1. yourlastname (the root folder)

If you clicked on it once to select it it would be empty

If you double-clicked on the folder, it would open up and you would see that it is empty.
  2. media or images or graphics (your choice) and put it inside the root folder (drag & drop)

If you look inside the folder it will now show the 2nd folder as being inside.

Later you will save the root folder and all contents into my turnin folder

Find and download images from different sources.

Activity #2 -Adding Images to your Website Folder

In this activity, I want you to find and add a few images to your website folder called "Graphics".
NOTE: You may have called the folder Images or Media.

You should only use images and art that is clearly marked as freely available. Otherwise, email and ask permission!!  A good resources for reviewing some of the issues involved is Fair Use Harbor -- a tutorial on fair use in educational settings
There are a number of sites on the Internet that make images freely available for others to use. Here are some
(others are listed at:  Making Web Pages)
Important:  To add an image to your Web page, you have to first save it (either on the desktop, hard drive or on your disk)

How to Transfer an Image to Your Disk - When you get to your image, click on it and press on the right side of the mouse. Go down to Save image as, Save it.  (Use either .gif or .jpg as the extension as apporpriate. You will probably not have to type the extension, just save it.)

Save the images in your folder that you titled either media or images or graphics above in Activity #1(the name was your choice)

4. Use the above information to find an image you would like to have on your website home page; perhaps as a decoration, logo, aesthetically pleasing to you, etc.

5. Put the picture of you that I gave you into this folder

Make a Personal Homepage

Activity #3 - Make a webpage that will be a home page about you.

You should print the Web page you create, when finished, and turn it in to me with your name on it for credit for this assignment or in my faculty turnin folder, whichever you are directed to do in class..

6. Open SeaMonkey (Window Tab > Composer) and a "new webpage" window will be opened automatically (in class demo)

7. Put your picture or other graphic on this page. Put any other graphics you want. Write about yourself and format and edit the page in any manner you like. (in class demo)

  • Title the page My Home Page or David's Home Page (use your name of course) or David's CABT160 Homepage, what ever you want.
  • Save the file as index.html

Save this page in the root folder, not in the graphics folder.

You will see the web page inside the Root folder floating with the other two files that are inside the Root folder.

Download a file from a website

Activity #4 - Many software files are free: browsers, FTP clients, email clients, adware & spyware, clever or cute accessories and so on.

8. Find something at CNet and download and install it, do a serach for "Free Downloads", AND/OR download one of the choices below.
Done at home, fill in the comments box below then click "Submit.".

http://www.download.com/

At CNet or in a search you would want to browse through the categories for something of interest. For instance, at CNet you might choose the category Audio & Video and download Lime Wire, an MP3 music file sharing sight for IPods. You would want to read the details and decide if it is ethical and moral or copyright infringement before deciding whether or not to do so.

Download and install Firefox 3 Browser

Download and install Mozilla Thinderbird E-mail Client
