Bad Startup Ideas and Plans Turned Good? 1

Question: I recently started an online business helping local artists and musicians sell their stuff online. It's a marketplace for locals that can allow them to reach outside our community. I've bought banner ads on several music and art websites but got little response. I've also paid for search ads on Yahoo and MSN, with little luck. What can I do to get better results?
