Using Shopsite
Note:
When the Home page and some other pages are on a domain server and others on the Shopsite server.

Part 1 - Getting Ready to Use Shopsite
Step 1 - Create a Site Root Folder and Home Page

Directions Printable Word Doc Version

Make a folder on your desktop called: (in class demo)

  1. root folder(yourlastname)

Make two webpages using Composer (comes bundled as part of Sea Monkey (click to Download) and Netscape), Word, Dreamweaver, HTML or any authoring tool you know how to use:

  • Make a home page titled Your Business Home Page (use the name of your business if you want) and name the file index.html. Save it in the root folder.
  • Make a second page titled About Us and name the file about.html. Save it in the root folder.

On the index.html page type the following:

Home | (Shopsite) Catalog | About Us (this is a menu bar)

“Your Business Name”

Business Idea Summary: explain your business in a paragraph

  • Link the word "Home" to the index.html page. Save this page.
  • Link the word "About Us" to the about.html page. Save this page.
  • Don't Link the word "Catalog" to anything yet. Save this page.
  • Copy the menu bar to the About Us page. Save this page.

Add any graphics, logo or text that you want to any of the two pages as the class progresses.

Tutorial: Assuming many of you have never made a simple Web page, I borrowed our Reference Librarian Topsy Smalley's tutorial for making a simple site, with her permission.

Part 2 - Getting Ready to Use Shopsite
Step 2 - Use CORE FTP to upload your site to the Webhawks Server

For this class, we will use a FTP client called CORE, the HTML server called "webhawks", and a directory for your files called public_html. CORE is a free download. http://www.coreftp.com/

We will upload our website files to the server and be able to view them through any browser connceted to the Internet, anywhere. In other words, your website will be published on the Internet...but almost no one will know it is there or what the URL is to view it because the world hasn't heard about it.
Click here for the Bus89 FTP lesson
