Course Description

An introduction to eCommerce for new or existing businesses planning to create a business presence online. Learn about eCommerce, planning and designing a Web site, Web assets, technology and Web architecture, Web sales and security, attracting and keeping customers, maintaining the business Web presence, legal issues and creating a simple business Web site.

Lectures are delivered via the Bus 89 instructor website

Most CourseWork is completed through the Blackboard online instructional system.

Due dates, schedules, coursework and grades are viewable via either system. The Blackboard Learning Modules show all assignments including readings, plus due dates and late dates for each week.

Business Idea - A specific Business Idea for an eCommerce site is recommended and will make the coursework more meaningful, but not required.

Attendance - Attendance is required. There are 16 meetings including the Final Exam meeting. You may be dropped as a no show the first week of classes. If you miss more than 2 weeks of class sessions (2 meetings) you may be dropped. However, it is the student's responsibility to drop a class. You recieve points for attendance. You cannot pass the course with less than 70% attendance! (at least 11 of 15 class days, not counting the final.)

Note: There are no "make-ups" for missed days. Extra Credit may be available.

Worksheets - Worksheets 1-6 & 8 are online, onscreen forms accessable from my class website (http://www.cabrillo.edu/~dambrosini/189Web/worksheets.html) that will be filled out and answered onscreen and then submitted by clicking on the "Submit Form" button at the bottom of the webpage. NOTE: After submitting the worksheet, log into BlackBoard, click on the Worksheet link and send a brief message saying you have submitted the worksheet.

Worksheets 7 is a handout you will be given where you will use a pencil to create a series of "thumbnail sketches" and a "Comp" to be turned in on paper. NOTE: After submitting the worksheet, log into BlackBoard, click on the Worksheet link and send a brief message saying you have submitted the worksheet.

Worksheets 9-10 & 12 are require you to think and offer your opinions and decisions and have no right or wrong answers. Read the instructions then you will write short answers to be turned in using Blackboard: either typed into the turnin window (preferred), or cut and pasted from a Word document you create into the turnin window (preferred), or attached as a file if necessary (Not preferred).

Worksheet 11 is an Excel Spreadsheet that will calculate your Business Startup costs. Using Excel, edit the template , and turn it in via the "Assignments" choice as a file attachment under "Course Tools" while logged onto Blackboard by the posted due dates.

Note: Late Worksheet assignments will be 10 points off. Extra Credit may be available.

LEXs - Learning Exercises - LEXs 1 to 5 and 7 to 12: are Word documents that require you to think and offer your opinions and decisions and have no right or wrong answers. You will write short answers to be turned in using Blackboard: either typed into the turnin window (preferred), cut and pasted from the Word document into the turnin window (preferred), or attached as a file if necessary (Not preferred). LEX 6 is turned in on paper in class. • Note: Late LEXs will be 10 points off. Extra Credit may be available.

Discussion - Online postings and responses via Blackboard. At my class website, click on Discussions for a list of topics to choose from for each Discussion. Post one orginal answer of your own and respond to two postings from your classmates. You will write short answers to be turned in using Blackboard: either typed into the turnin window (preferred), cut and pasted from the Word document into the turnin window (preferred), or attached as a file if really necessary (Not preferred).

Note: Late discussion postings will be 10 points off. Extra Credit may be available.

Late CourseWork - is marked as "Late" two weeks after the Due Date on the Assignments page. They are expected to be accurate and thoroughly completed. The Blackboard "Due date " is the Late date.

Xtra Credit - You will have some opportunities to get xtra credit points. They are noted on the CourseWork page. Others may be added.

Withdrawal policy - You may withdraw from the course with a W grade until 75% of the semester has elapsed. Contact the admissions and records office for details. Failure to follow the withdrawal procedure will result in an F grade being assigned at the end of the semester. If you would prefer a CR/NC instead of a grade, you must inform the instructor by the end of week 5.

You will use the class website as your textbook. Enrollment in this class gives you access to computers on campus. The class website is published on the Internet and is not password protected, thus you have access to the class website from any Internet connected computer on or off campus. However, to use a campus computer you need your class login and password. Click here for printable instructions. You may use the Library computers without having to log in. Students will use the same login for both Blackboard and classroom computers. (See FAQs for more info)

Printing on campus requires you to go to the CTC (Computer Technology Center) in Aptos or Watsonville and open a printing account with $5.00. You are charged $ .10 a page for black and white, $.50 a page for color.
