Worksheet 3 -  Root Folder, Images and Saving

Directions:

Create Your Root Folder

A website is a collection of files (html pages and graphics) arranged in folders and "hosted" on an Internet computer called a server. The files are viewed (served) from the server when a computer user uses a client computer (one that is temporarily logged onto the Internet) to type a URL address into a browser window (software like I.E. or Firefox) to ask the server for the websites home page.

When you make a website, you create your files and keep them in a master folder called a Root Folder. A copy of it is "published to the server.

On the desktop:
  • Make 2 folders: (in class demo)
  1. yourlastname (the root folder)

If you clicked on it once to select it it would be empty

If you double-clicked on the folder, it would open up and you would see that it is empty.
  2. Make a second folder and name it images or media or graphics (your choice) and put it inside the root folder (drag & drop)

If you look inside the folder it will now show the 2nd folder as being inside.

Later you will save the root folder and all contents into my faculty turnin folder

Download 2 or 3 Graphics

Directions: - Find 2 or 3 images you would like to have on your website home page; perhaps as a decoration, logo, aesthetically pleasing to you, etc.

Save the images in your folder that you titled either media or images or graphics above. (the name was your choice)

Don't get carried away and download too many images. It may get confusing as we build your website to be managing extra files.

Save Them in 3 Places

At this time, I want you to learn to form good habits regarding storing and organizing your files and graphics.

Directions: - Do the following:

1. Copy the Root folder and its contents to your Flash Drive
2. Save the Root folder and its contents to your computers hard drive

NOTE: Get used to Copying from the cabrillo lab or classroom computer you are using to your Flash drive AND from your personal computer to the Flash drive every time you edit or add to your files. You need to always be backing up your work.

Directions - Open Blackboard and do the following:

1. Attach one of the graphics, one you want to incorporate into your site or the blog-site later.
2. In the Blackboard window, briefly describe your experience, at least 100 words, and submit the assignment

Note: you can cut and paste these questions into the turnin link in Blackboard and then type your answers.
