Questions
Are we using MS Office
2003, 2007 or 2010?
You can use any one you have but we will use 2010 in the classroom and the CTC Labs.
- MS Office 2010 is the default; if you
double-click a file to open it, it will open in 2010.
- Office 2010 allows you to save a file
as a 97-2003 file or a 2007/2010 file.
I have a Mac, can I still take the
class?
- Yes! You will need MS Office
software for the Mac Mac versions come out a year after the PC version thus, they have 2004, 2008 and 2011 respectively.
- The Mac version can open and edit files from
the pc but you
must save the files as pc versions when working on the Mac ("Save As:" .doc,
.xls, .ppt, .mdb for 97-2003 and .docx, .xlsx. .accdb, .pptx for 2007 & 2010) before you turn them in.
What if my version
of MS Office doesn't include Access?
Be
aware that some of you may not have Access on your MSOffice software
if you don't have MSOffice Pro version. You can use a trial
version of Access available from Microsoft or complete the assignments
at the Cabrillo lab(s). Don't download the trial version until you need
it. It expires after 30 days.
Can I use Open Office?
Yes, maybe. Open Office is free
download provided by Sun Microsystems to compete with MS
Office. You have to save your files as MS Office files ("Save As:" .doc,
.xls, .ppt, .mdb). However, I prefer you don't because we have
had some problems with it.

Which Browsers and
Operating Systems are supported by BlackBoard?
Blackboard
doesn't support (run correctly) on all browsers and operating systems:

Is there help with
BlackBoard?
Yes, there is Help Desk Support.
The TLC’s Blackboard Help Desk is staffed Mon-Fri
8-5, Fri 9-3, and provides email and web
support. It is staffed by student assistants who have taken classes
using Bb. Student emails are answered the first
weekend of the new term by Francine. A new TLC position was submitted
to HR for classification study. It will
include Blackboard admin duties not previously outlined in an LIA position.
Also, you can view "students
tutorials" that
explain Assessments, Assignments, Discussions, and other tools on Blackboard
(aka WebCT).

Access
Questions
Is there wireless access
on campus?
Yes, in most areas. Hawknet is a free wireless internet service provided
by Cabrillo College to its staff and students.
Can I use my Laptop?
Yes. When you open your browser you will prompted with a login screen
to enter your Student Account username and password.
Does our 515 classroom have wireless access?
Yes; but don't forget that
you need to use the Laptop Login (515, 515) and then your student login

Discussion
Questions
Where do I find the
topics and where do I find the answers?
The topics are listed on
the Coursework page on my website, under the Discussions links
.
You are given a question
and, in most cases, a brief primer on the topic and/or links. These
are meant to help you get started. HOWEVER, I expect you to
use other sources
online, in print or by interview that you find yourself. Using the
computer to research answers is preferred. Remember to choose two topics from the list for each Discussion and make two original posts and respond to two other student's posts.
Where do I post the
answers?
Go to Blackboard and choose
Discussions from the menu on the left. Type or cut & Past your answer
into the
appropriate window for each post by
Discussion number.
