Course Information

Introduction to Oceanography 10 Online is a transferable hybrid online - discussion - lab course presenting some of the more important phenomena in oceanography; geological, chemical, and physical relationships.

Ocean Science

The science of Oceanography involves many different disciplines such as: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Geography & Astronomy. The more background you have in each of these areas the better, however there are no prerequisites for this course.  I do recommended that you have recently completed a course in elementary algebra such as MATH 154 here at Cabrillo. We will be studying the following branches of Oceanography and most of the associated topics.

  1. Geological Oceanography: Sea Floor Topography, Sea Floor Spreading / Plate Tectonics / Ocean Basin Evolution, Geophysics, Marine Sediments, The Coastal Environment
  2. Chemical Oceanography: Origin of Seawater, Salinity, Trace Elements, Nutrients, Dissolved Gases, Inorganic Precipitates
  3. Physical Oceanography: The Movement of Seawater, Currents, Waves, Tides, Temperature, Density, Tropical Cyclones.

The fourth branch: Biological Oceanography, we will not be studying in this condensed CyberSession format of the course.  If you would like to learn about biological oceanography I recommend that you take marine biology (BIO 11B) offered each semester here at Cabrillo.

Recommended Preparation

I recommend that you have recently completed a course in elementary algebra such as MATH 154 here at Cabrillo.
