Course Information

This is an introductory Dreamweaver course taught entirely online. Students use Dreamweaver to combine text and graphics to create, edit and manage web sites. Students must have foundational knowledge of HTML and be able to create and edit graphics (Photoshop or equivalent). Students must have access to a computer with Internet access. See hardware/software requirements below.

PreReqs

DM 60: Introduction to HTML (You must have basic foundational knowledge of HTML.)
DM 1 (You must be able to use Photoshop or an equivalent program.)

What we will cover:

  1. Review HTML, file organization, Dreamweaver help; defining sites; type in DW
  2. Working with graphics:
  3. Optimizing images, placing graphics, adding Flash elements, view/edit HTML, CSS panel, creating rollover images
  4. Hypertext links, graphic links, email links, image maps
  5. Page Design
  6. Create tables, modify tables, tracing image, creating a sitemap
  7. CSS & Forms; Design concepts
  8. Javascript behaviors
  9. Multiple state rollovers, browser sniffers
  10. Slicing
  11. Creating comps in Photoshop
  12. Templates & Libraries

On-campus and/or online lab hours

Regular class attendance (defined by online participation) is required. Active participation in the course includes contributions to the discussion board on a weekly basis in addition to submitting weekly assignments. The online lab is defined as a minimum of 3 hours per week work in Dreamweaver. The course management system allows me to track your progress through the course.

I'm providing an opportunity for students to choose the type of support material they want to use for the course, (option 1) textbook, or (option 2) an online video training library. One or the other is REQUIRED.

Dreamweaver CS3 Essential Training is a tutorial including over 100 QuickTime videos designed for beginning to intermediate Dreamweaver users. It requires your instructor sign you up and you will be billed by the publisher for $38.95. Access to the training library will include additional tutorials on Photoshop and Flash good for the duration of the term.

Hardware and Software Requirements

This course will be taught using a combination of lessons developed in both Dreamweaver MX2004 and Dreamweaver 8. Dreamweaver CS3 is not yet available in the lab. Either version of the software is sufficient for this course. The user interface has not changed that much. The Computer Technology Center at both the Aptos and Watsonville campus has computers for students to do their assignments on.

You will need regular access to a computer with a CD drive and one of the following browsers. Be sure you are using a supported browser and your browser settings are correct for WebCT, our course shell. Browser tune-up page.
