"Just Turn It Off" Campaign

On Earth Day (Wednesday, April 22, 2009), between 12:00 and 1:00, Cabrillo College encouraged students, faculty, and members of the community to turn off as many as lights and other electrical equipment as as safely possible. Here are the results:

The dotted line on the graph shows what we would have probably used without the "Turn it Off" campaign. The green area represents the total energy saved, which amounts to about 65 kiloWatt-hours!  If we could do this 8 hrs a day over the course of a year we'd save about 130,000 kwH, or $10,000, or 32 tons of CO2, all while still keeping our College running smoothly.

The graph illustrates some other very interesting information: The big jump in power around 7:30 pm is from outdoor lights coming on (parking lots, hallways, etc.) The campus is hoping to reduce this use by installing a 'night light' system, which will allow the main lights to be turned off after 11 pm wherever possible.
