A little bit about me personally:
outside of my professional activities I enjoy spending time with my
family, my wife Nancy and our boy Sage.
-
I have a Masters degree in Geography
from Cambridge University, England, a Doctorate in Sociology from
the University of Kent (also in England) and many years of teaching
and research experience. I also teach at San Jose State University,
San Francisco City College, and Gavilan College. I love teaching
sociology because it is an opportunity to look critically and thoughtfully
at the society in which we live, and contributes to making the world
a better place for our children. In the courses we look at many
contemporary issues such as cultural diversity in the U.S., crime
and violence, the mass media, education, healthcare, economic and
political systems, religion , drug and alcohol abuse, gender
inequalities and more. We also explore sociological theory and
analysis which gives us much insight into the nature of human society.
I encourage student participation in the classes which include lectures,
discussions, small group work, videos and student presentations.

In my own research I have been
looking at society and environmental problems, particularly to do
with water (where it comes from and where it goes) and the role of
Native Americans in the environmental movement. You can read
about my research in the journal "Organization and Environment",
Vol 11, No. 3, Sept. 1998, pp 287-313.
