Course Description: Introduces green building strategies and the LEED building rating system. Prepares for the LEED Green Associate Exam, a requirement for becoming a LEED Accredited Professional.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Investigate LEED rating system requirements for the construction, operation, maintenance, and life cycle of sustainable buildings.
  1. Critically assess the requirements for the construction, operation, maintenance, and life cycle of sustainable buildings.
  1. Compare and contrast LEED certified versus conventional construction and its impact on people and the environment.

Required: Reading. Memorizing. Coming to all class meetings on time and prepared. This is a class to prepare the student to take the LEED Green Associate exam. We will be taking several quizzes and exams throughout the entire semester.

Attendance and Punctuality are mandatory. Unexcused tardiness will have a negative impact on points earned for attendance.

There will be ten scheduled quizzes on material covered in class. NO makeup quizzes will be given.

There will be one class project/presentation.

There are three scheduled exams. NO makeup exams will be given except for a serious and compelling reason as defined by the College. A comprehensive final exam will be given during final exam week.

Extra credit will be given for writing single page critiques of current events pertaining to Sustainable Construction, USGBC, LEED, etc.  It can be based on articles, seminars, meetings, etc.  Critique should express your opinion and what you have learned.  It should not just be a summary of the article or event.  Each successful extra credit report will earn 5 points.  Students also have the opportunity to receive extra credit by preparing and giving a presentation to the class. Students can also propose their own extra credit opportunity (requires advance approval from instructor). Extra credit opportunities are unlimited.
