Math Anxiety
-
Make sure you start in the right class.
- assessment test
- math is like climbing a ladder, one step
at a time.
- to be successful, you need to be in the
right class.
- usually the first chapter of the textbook is a review chapter,
go to the bookstore and look at the first chapter of your textbook.
- Communicate with the instructor.
- if you have any special needs.
- use the office hour.
- don't forget the Math Learning Center (MLC),
room 1074.
- instructor is here to serve your needs, don't
be afraid to ask.
- Read your math text.
- information dense.
- read one sentence at a time with a pencil and
paper next to you to take notes.
- many times the book leaves out steps in the
examples, try to fill them in.
- go to room 1074 (MLC) and use another book as
a reference for another interpretation.
- Do your homework regularly.
- math is a hands-on subject.
- learn by doing.
- if you get behind it is hard to catch up
because all ideas build on each other.
- work in study groups.
- don't get frustrated over careless mistakes, slow
down and check your work.
- you need to focus, have a quiet area when working
alone.
- rule of thumb, 2 hours out of class for each hour
in class.
- Ask questions.
- don't start with "This may be a stupid
question..."
- be specific, whether you don't understand a
concept, process, example, specific problem, etc.
- math is a slow, tedious process - have patience
and persistence, you can do it!
