Hiking Class (16 weeks)
Phil Kaplan
Cabrillo College
Earning a Grade:
A = perfect attendance, attend one volunteer activity
P (Pass) = up to 8 absences
NP (No Pass) = 9 or more absences
If you want to earn a “B” or “C” grade you must talk with me individually about the requirements.
Up to 3 classes can be made-up during the semester. Students may attend one of the hikes led by our class docent, Bill Perry who generally leads hikes on weekends. Bill’s signature is required and no written report is necessary. The Ventana Chapter of the Sierra Club leads hikes on most weekends. See http://www.ventana.sierraclub.org/schedule/index.shtml for schedule published 6 times per year. Other local organizations often lead group hikes. The signature of the hike leader is required. One missed hike can be made up on your own and requires a 500-word typed description handed-in or emailed to me before the last day of class. Students may attend the other day of hiking class (e.g., Wednesday student comes to Friday class or vice versa) and it will not count as an absence.
In the event of injury, extended illness, or other extenuating circumstances, see the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility for adding and dropping a course with the necessary paperwork being submitted to the Admissions Office; failure to do so may result in a “No Pass” grade. A “W” (Withdraw) grade cannot be given after 75% of the semester is completed.
Numerous volunteer activities will be presented by the instructor throughout the semester. Students earning an A grade must participate in one volunteer activity. Click here and here for the activities to choose from. Only activities on these lists will fulfill the requirement. Other volunteer activities are not eligible. To complete this requirement, students must get the signature and note from the director or coordinator of the activity stating that you participated.
