We meet each Wednesday and Friday at 9:15 AM and leave soon after. Do not be late! If you are meeting us at the hike site you will need to consult with the instructor ahead of time as to the exact location and time. “Cost Plus” as a meeting place refers to the Gateway Shopping Center at 450 River Street in Santa Cruz, not “Costco”. E-mail is generally the best way to contact me.

June 23/25: Orientation and optional hike to Nisene Marks (meet at Cabrillo Gymnasium at 9:30 am)

July 7/9: Henry Cowell State Park (meet at Cost Plus or Probation Center on Graham Hill Rd.)

July 14/16: Delaveaga Wilderness Area (meet at Cost Plus)

July 21/23 Land of Medicine Buddha (meet at Cabrillo Tennis Courts or Phil's Food Mart on Soquel Drive and Main Street in Soquel)

July 28/30: Pogonip (meet at Cost Plus)

We may encounter poison oak, stinging nettle, ticks, wasps and mosquitoes on many of our hikes. Light-colored lightweight long pants and insect repellent are advisable. Always check for ticks. Shower and wash clothes to avoid poison oak after each hike. Depending on the time of the year, expect muddy or dusty conditions. Bring plenty of water and energy snacks and wear sunscreen. Good footwear is required. Arrive early to use the restroom as we will be in areas without facilities.

Earning a Grade

This course requires active participation each day of class so it is important for you to attend every class session, arrive on time, and come prepared. Your participation not only enhances your own learning, it benefits other students in the class. Your level of participation is reflected in your grade and since you can’t participate if you are not in class, absences will also be reflected in your grade

Up to 2 classes can be made-up during the semester. Students may attend one of the hikes led by our class docent, Bill Perry who leads hikes on most Saturdays. Bill’s signature is required. The Ventana Chapter of the Sierra Club leads hikes on most weekends. See www.ventana.sierraclub.org for schedule published 6 times per year. Other local organizations often lead group hikes. The signature of the hike leader is required. Be sure to include your name on the verification form. Students may attend the other day of hiking class (e.g., Wednesday student comes to Friday class or vice versa) and it will not count as an absence.

In the event of injury, extended illness, or other extenuating circumstances see the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility for adding and dropping a course with the necessary paperwork being submitted to the Admissions Office; failure to do so may result in a “No Pass” grade. A “W” (Withdraw) grade cannot be given after 75% of the semester is completed

See the Hiking Section of this website for hiking resources, frequently asked questions, class pictures and all course information.
