The Internet provides access to enormous quantities of information—ranging in quality from wonderful to nonsense. Get your feet wet in the following career-related sites.
1. Locally, the Central Coast Small Business Development Center (located right here on the Cabrillo College campus) has a website (www.businessonline.org/). What are some of the services offered through this Center?
2. The federal government has on online version of the Occupational Outlook Handbook at www.bls.gov/oco/ . Look up a career that you are interested in. (This site is sometimes hard to get into—you may need to come back.) Which career did you find?
3. Another local website (www.santacruzvcc.com/) is maintained by Santa Cruz County. You can register as a regular user or visit as a Guest (click "Not registered?" by Sign In button, then "Option 1 - Try us out" on the Logon page). What are some programs and services that are listed?
4. The California Employment Development Department also has lots of information at www.caljobs.ca.gov/ . What kinds of info and services are available? (The "Job Seeker" section requires registration with your Social Security number, but you can look around the rest of the site without doing that.)
5. Another site that is specific to California (by region) is http://jobstar.org/ . What are some of the resources shown there?
6. Finally, a great place to find a wealth of online information is Cabrillo College Library's career info page at http://libwww.cabrillo.edu/depts/careers.php . What are 3 links that sound interesting to you?
