Classroom Policies

In order to make our class a comfortable and encouraging learning environment for everyone, everyone is expected to abide by the following policies.

   
 

Class Policies - General

  • Please treat other students, the instructor, and guests with courtesy and respect.
  • Please do your best to be on-time for class. If you are late, enter quietly and find out what you missed from another student.
  • Please listen when others are speaking.
  • A student who misses 3 weeks of classes may be dropped from the course.
  • Bigotry and prejudices of any kind will not be tolerated.
  • Any unprofessional conduct or rudeness will not be tolerated.
  • Communications with others including discussion areas and email, will be done in a professional, courteous, and polite manner.
   
 

Online Policies and Expectations:

  • Treat other students and myself with courtesy and respect.
  • Forums, chats and other forms of conversation will take place in a comfortable learning environment.
  • Be supportive and encouraging, not demeaning or arrogant.
  • If you do not have something supportive to say, then please keep your comments to yourself. ie. No "RTFM"
  • Expressing any personal issues with someone, including public figures, students, faculty, Cabrillo or companies is not permitted.
  • Use your full name.
  • Help and encourage each other... we are all in this together. The more you learn, the more you realize what you do not know. And we can't be knowledgable about everything. :-)
   
 

Class Policies - Classroom Computers

  • The computers in the classroom are for instructional purposes used by a several classes.
  • Do not install any software on the computers in the classroom or the lab.
  • Do not copy any software from any of the computers in the classroom or the lab.
  • Do not change the desktop or any of the default configurations of the computer unless it is part of a lab exercise.
  • Any misuse of the equipment will not be tolerated.
   
 

If you cannot abide by these policies, please withdraw from the class.

Letter Grade

  • 40% - Chapter Assessments (3 attempts per assessment, with the highest grade counting)
  • 15% - Labs (See Lab Documentation below)
  • 15% - Participation in Blackboard Forums
  • 15% - Project/Presentation/White Paper (Choose one)
  • 15% - Final Exam

Passing (non-letter) Grade (P)

  • Satisfactory participation of Blackboard Forums
  • Satisfactory completion of Cisco Academy Final Exam
  • Satisfactory completion of 4 of 7 Cisco Academy Chapter Assesssments

 

 

 

Lab Documentation

  • Complete one lab per chapter
  • Please limit yourself to one lab per chapter until after the semester
  • Read the lab prior to getting on NetLab
  • Document and email be the following information for each lab:
    • Subject: CIS 188: Lab x.y TT n (Example: CIS 188: Lab 4.2 TT-B)
    • Team member names
    • Commands used in troubleshooting
    • Commands used in the solution
    • Feedback: Include if this is regarding the ILM or SLM, Step number and feedback. (Example: Step 6: Before attempting the pings and tracert in the first four bullets after "When rebooting DLS1 primary HSRP router..." the instructions should include "Reload DLS1 and then do the following four commands."

  Arranged Hours:
 
  • In accordance with the California Code of Regulations, Title 5, section
    55002 Standards and Criteria for Courses and Classes, subsections (a)(3)
    and (b)(3) [Course Outline of Record] and (a)(4) and (b)(4) [Conduct of
    Course], and in accordance with Title 5, section 58050, the syllabus shall
    describe educational activities required of all students enrolled in classes
    with supplemental hours of instruction as described in the course outline
    of record and approved by the Curriculum Committee.
  • The class syllabus is evidence that students enrolled in courses with hours
    by arrangement attached, as listed in the Schedule of Classes, were
    informed of their individual weekly or daily supplemental instruction
    schedule and their responsibility to adhere to the schedule. The
    information regarding arranged time, place, and availability of instructor
    demonstrates that the instructor is providing immediate supervision and
    control during the scheduled supplemental hours. (Supplemental hours
    must be scheduled the same amount of hours each week of the term for
    credit courses that meet coterminous with the primary term. In credit
    courses using daily census procedure [noncoterminous],
    supplemental hours must be scheduled for the same amount of hours as for each
    scheduled day of the course or as a portion of the hours the course is
    regularly scheduled for each day it meets.)
  • In accordance with Title 5, section 58050 (a)(7) and section 53400 et seq.,
    the instructor must possess the minimum qualifications or equivalencies
    for service as the course instructor.
   
 

Learning Outcomes:

1. Using one or several of the standard network troubleshooting processes develop and implement a troubleshooting strategy to identify and solve problems in complex enterprise networks.
2. Analyze and troubleshoot network performance issues in a complex enterprise network using verification, debug, and analytical outputs from network devices such as routers and switches.
