Lone Pine-to-Whitney Portal Ride

May 21, 2016

Dave Wyman rallied the cycling affecionados of past Solvang and Chico rides for a more challenging effort - the Lone Pine to Whitney Portal Ride. In the book "The 100 Toughest Climbs in California", it's rated #5. And 13th in the United States. It's an unrelenting climb which gets steeper with each passing mile, gaining 4600 ft of elevation in only 13 miles, ending at 8,358 ft Whitney Portal cafe. Dave and Dan drove up from LA, and Silas met me in Santa Cruz where we planned to drive over the newly opened Tioga Pass. However, after we got passed Merced, we got the word that the pass was closing at 8pm due to new snow - before we could get up and over. We instead had to turn around and get onto Hwy 99 and head south, over Tehachapi Pass.

Friday night, arrived at Alabama Hills rock formations, and did this shot of the Sierra near Mt Whitney lit by the 99% moon, and a bit of red light from my headlamp parked on the sand nearby

Sat morning at camp, I'm enjoying the spectacular first light on the Sierra
