A Heat-Training Ride up the Swanton Loop

Aug 15, 2015

I'd half-considered driving through Yosemite to June Lake and doing the informal June Lake practice triathlon. I love the area, and loved doing the official triathlon their 2 years ago. But, it was cancelled, and I had a lot of computer work to do anyway. So, Saturday the 15th was the hottest day of the year (so far) - 96F in Santa Cruz. An opportunity to so some quality heat training, in preparation for the Ironman 70 coming up next month, which would also be starting in Santa Cruz and going up to the Swanton Loop and beyond. Another motivator was the promise to stop at the Whale City Bakery in Davenport for one of their excellent oatmeal raisin cookies. I've done almost nothing on the bike all week, so it sounded appealing. Then I'd do a run on the beach, and then settle in for the late afternoon and evening with my laptop.

Before Davenport, I'm surprised to see Ferrell riding back down the coast. Turns out he'd just completed the same ride, except he did the Swanton loop part twice. He got in his ride before the temperatures got really bad. For me, one loop was enough

Another checkoff was buying a load of avacados at my favorite road-side stand, north of Scott Creek.

Indian Paintbrush by the roadside. Had to stop and try out my new camera in macro mode. So far, I really like the picture quality of the Canon Powershot Elph 150-Is
