I was a bit of a late bloomer to athletics. Although I was on the JV tennis team in high school, the idea of long distance running and cycling as fun was just plain outside my paradigm until my late 20's. Then, my very last day in Santa Monica after I'd finished my dissertation work at UCLA in '84, I signed up for a 10k race just for the heck of it. Something clicked, and I was hooked! Soon after arriving at the University of Arizona in Tucson for my post-doc, I saw a blurb for the "StrawMan Triathlon" at Camp Verde, a tiny town near Prescott. This was right after the Ironman in Hawaii was becoming a media thing and the sport was starting to grow beyond a few crazies. I had a GREAT time at my first triathlon! I liked the strategizing, the idea of a multi-sport race, the endurance aspect, and pacing yourself to maximize your performance. I'm not a gifted athlete - a solid middle-of-the-pack'r is more like it. But I just love this sport! At Strawman I saw this attractive young woman out on the course with little devil horns on her running hat. After the race I ran into her, and Carole introduced me to the triathlon community in Tucson. It consisted of future pros Paul Huddle and Jimmy Ricotello, as well as Carole, Charles, a gold medal olympic swimmer, and a few others, and with social center Dr. Bob Buckingham. It was a great bunch of people and for the next year and a half I trained, competed, and partied with this group. In 1986 I started my job at Cabrillo College and found a new group to train and go to races with. I believe that each sport's devotees have their own special culture and personality. I think triathletes are the best fit for me. They have a solid work ethic combined with a joie de vivre that's really inspiring to be with, and also motivating and energizing for the rest of my activities.
Pre 2003, all of my photos are on slides, and I may or may not every get around to scanning them in and posting here. But now I've got a digital and most of my races will get some sort of post here...
