Answers to frequently asked questions:

You are  REQUIRED  to attend the orientation on the first day of classes.


There are NO exceptions.

You are required to attend class on campus every Thursday from

2:30 - 3:50 p.m.

  • The rest of the class will be conducted through Canvas, the course management system used at Cabrillo It will be available on the first day of the semester.  
  • You can access Canvas by scrolling down to the bottom of any page on the Cabrillo website.
    • The first time you access the site, you must register by clicking on the link " Look up your user name and create a password".
      • You will enter your Last Name, date of birth, and Student ID.
      • You will be provided with a username, you create your own password. These are case sensitive and the password is not available to the instructor so be sure you remember it.
      • After you are registered, you simply enter your username and password in the appropriate fields.

If you have trouble logging in, you can contact the TLC at 831 477-3241 or If you still have trouble, be sure you are using your STUDENT ID (NOT your Social Security Number).

You will be able to register on Canvas three days before the semester begins.

You will be able to access the class Canvas site the first day of the semester. When you access the site, take a look at the syllabus, online behavior guide and the weekly modules. All your online course work - quizzes, documentary tests, reading assignments, powerpoints, journals and assignments - are found in each module.

You MUST have regular access to a computer and a reliable internet connection in order to take this class.

As a Cabrillo student, you may use computers in the Computer Technology Center (room 1400), the Library.

You must also have access to Word, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat Reader;

After the semester begins, you will have access to the Cabrillo Technology Center where these programs are available.

Any attachments submitted to Canvas MUST have a .doc, .docx or .rtf extension. Any assignment submitted as an attachment in another form will receive no credit.

About the class:

The course will look at major events and themes shaping US history from Reconstruction through the 2008 financial crises.

We will examine America’s changing definitions and debates over American identity and citizenship; social movements and changes in public policy; historical impacts of economic policy and America’s international relationships.

We are using the textbook Unfinished Nation, Volume 2 by Brinkley, concise 8th edition. Its ISBN # is: 9781259284755.

You will also read Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody. Both books can be found in the Cabrillo Bookstore.

In our Thursday class, we will review using Canvas, clarify assignments, view clips of documentaries or movies, do group work, view powerpoints, have discussions and hear lectures.
