Course Description

Data Entry on Computer consists of two one-unit individualized courses designed to teach you proper techniques for computerized data entry. You will use a computer program that allows you to learn at your own pace and simulates common business and government data entry systems.  You will work with the computerized program and a textbook containing data entry lessons. 103A must be completed before 103B.

How to Enroll

1.      Complete advance or walk-in registration, or if adding later in the semester, obtain an add slip from an instructor in the Computer Technology Center (CTC) Room 1400 or Watsonville Center Lab Room 4510, third floor.

2.      Submit the add slip to Admissions and Records and pay your fees.

3.      Complete an orientation during the first week of classes. Times are in the Schedule of Classes. If you miss an orientation, talk to a CABT instructor in the lab to schedule an individualized orientation. Students may enroll up to the 12th week of classes.

Student Expectations

Expect to spend 14-35 hours of lab work, sometimes more, depending on individual experience and aptitude. Expect to complete at least one lesson a week and show your progress to the instructor. Although prior keyboarding experience is not a requirement for this course, students are encouraged to take the Keyboarding courses CABT 110A & B.

Text: Data Entry - Concepts and Applications, Third Edition, by Buzby and Locke, ECM Paradigm. Some copies are available for loan at the lab front desk.

Diskette: Buy one 1.44 MB floppy diskette, preferably pre-formatted for Windows.

Software: The Data Entry software program is installed on the computers in the CTC and the Watsonville lab. If you have bought the textbook, you may also get a copy of the software to install on your own PC. See the instructor for this.

Grades:

This class can be taken on the regular grading system (A-F) or on a Credit/NoCredit basis. Notify the instructor by the 5th week of classes if you want the CR/NC option. All work must be completed before finals week. An Incomplete grade can be assigned only if you have completed 75% of the course work to passing standards, and an illness or emergency prevents you from completing the assignments. To receive a Withdraw (W) grade, you must officially withdraw by the 12th week of the semester. You must have had at least one assignment scored by the instructor by week 12 or you may be dropped from the course.

To receive credit (CR) for the course you need to:

1.      Complete 3 take-home quizzes with 100% accuracy. (CABT 103A only)

2.      Key data with 99% accuracy.

3.      Show the instructor your summary screens upon completion of each lesson.

Learning Outcomes

103A: Competently and accurately enter alphanumeric business data into typical business and government data entry applications.

103B: Demonstrate increased effectiveness in entering data in moderately complex computer-based data entry environments, including payroll systems, sales and purchase orders, and accounts receivable/accounts payable.

EVERYTHING MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE FINALS WEEK!

BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS

To complete CABT 103A complete Chapters 1-18 in the textbook and the corresponding computer exercises.  CABT 103B covers Chapters 19-25.

Keep track of your progress on your Progress Sheet Handout and make sure that your instructor has scored all your work.

Preliminaries

1.      Attend an Orientation session during the first week of classes in the CTC (Computer Lab) or Watsonville Center lab. If you miss this, contact an instructor in the lab.

2.      Once you have your text, class handouts, and a 3.5" floppy diskette, go to the Computer Lab and obtain your personal ID and password for logging onto the computers there. Handouts and instructions are available in the Computer Lab for doing this and logging on. If you are taking this course in a distance education format, please read the Distance Education requirements sheet.

3.      No printing is necessary for this class.

4.      If you are confused or frustrated, talk to the instructor. The TAs in the labs can help you with logging in and out, and general computer problems, but they will probably not be familiar with this course's assignments.

5.      Label your diskette with your name, section number and phone number. It's your record of your work. DON'T lose or damage it! Take it with you when you go.
