Basic Computer Keyboarding

Course Description

CABT 210 (formerly CABT 290BK) is a basic skills level keyboarding class that introduces elementary keyboarding techniques using the alphabet keys. It is designed for the student having little or no experience with typing or computer keyboarding and who desires a gentle approach to learning keyboarding or who may need to overcome physical or other limitations. It is a self-paced class, having no regular class meetings. Students will practice using the keyboarding program Keyboarding Pro to practice a minimum of 25 hours, and reaching a minimum of 10 words per minute (WPM) with no more than 1 error per minute (epm) in 3-minute diagnostic timed writings.

 

Grades:

This class is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis. You can receive 1/2 unit if you pass the course, but your grade will not affect your grade point average. All work must be turned in and final diagnostic writings completed BEFORE finals week.

 

An Incomplete grade can be assigned only if you have completed 75% of the course work to passing standards, and an illness or emergency prevents you from completing the assignment. To receive a Withdraw (W) grade, you must officially withdraw by the 12th week of the semester. You must turn in at least one assignment by week 12 or you may be dropped from the course. All work is due BEFORE finals week.

 

To receive credit (CR) for the course you need to:

1.      Complete Lessons 1-10 in Keyboarding Pro and related diagnostic writings, consistently reaching at least 10 words per minute.

2.      Turn in progress reports as required. (See the Progress Sheet handout)

3.      Document at least 25 hours of practice by submitting a lab hours log.

 

Learning Outcome

 

Demonstrate elementary keyboarding skills on the alphabetic computer keyboard with the goal of between 10 to 24 words a minute with no more than one error-per-minute.

 

Optional Text: College Keyboarding, Keyboarding Course, Lessons 1-25, by VanHuss, Forde and Woo, South-Western Publishing Company, either 15th (2002) or 16th (2006) edition. This textbook may be required to complete some timed writings.  Copies are available for loan at the Aptos and Watsonville computer labs. Bring a photo ID to borrow the book.

Software: Keyboarding Pro is used to complete Lessons 1-10 for CABT 290BK.

 

The program is available in the CTC and Watsonville Center Computer Lab. Optionally, you may purchase a copy of the Keyboarding Pro program at the college bookstore to install on your own computer.

 

Turn in your work: To your instructor or to the instructor's box in the computer lab.

Pick Up Your Work: In the class folder in the file cabinet. Ask instructor for location.
