Overview of CWEE

  • Cooperative Work Education is a structured method of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience.
  • A cooperative education experience, commonly known as a "co-op", provides academic credit for structured job experience.
  • Co-op experiences are either full-time (40 hours per week) alternating periods (semester, quarter) of work and school or part-time (20 hours per week) combining work and school during the same time period.
  • Co-op experiences are paid or unpaid though always supervised by a professional in the students' chosen field of study
  • Combine work experience with classroom instruction to develop knowledge and skills necessary to successfully transition from studies into the workforce.
  • Students develop and increase career oriented decision making skills
  • Students earn units toward completion of degree

Requirements and Process

  • Obtain a paid or a volunteer job.  Only hours worked or volunteered during the course of the semester are counted toward completion of course.  The CWEE program can not directly assist in finding work for students though resources are available here: Information on finding work/volunteer opportunities 
  • Determine Unit Value of course you wish to take.  The number of units for a course depends on hours worked or volunteered.  Refer to table to determine Unit Value.  Maximum 4 Units.

Credit is based on recorded work hours, as follows:

Paid work (75 hours/unit) Volunteer Work (60 hours/unit)
75 hours = 1 unit
150 hours = 2 units
225 hours = 3 units
300 hours = 4 units
60 hours = 1 unit
20 hours = 2 units
180 hours = 3 units
240 hours = 4 units
  1. Attend an Orientation Session to meet with the Cooperative Work Experience (CWEE) Coordinator  
  2. Complete the online Student Pre-Registration Form  
  3. Upon completion of Orientation, you will receive an Add Code for registration  
  4. Meet individually with your assigned CWEE Instructor.  Work collaboratively to generate Learning Objectives  
  5. During semester continue to work or volunteer while focusing on established learning objectives.  If any changes to your work schedule or learning objectives arise, be sure to maintain communication with your Work Experience Instructor.  
  6. At end of semester submit all required paperwork and final project to Work Experience Instructor

Grades and Completion

GRADING POLICY Credit or no-credit is based on the following:

  • Quality of learning objectives
  • Completeness and quality of completed two monthly time cards
  • Promptness in submitting time cards verifying hours worked
  • Promptness in submitting required assignments
  • Completeness and quality of assignments
  • Student appointments -- adherence to these guidelines
    • be available
    • return CWEE Instructor phone calls
    • keep appointments
    • notify CWEE Instructor if unable to keep appointments
  • Employer rating of objectives attained
  • Overall evaluation of work performance

Receiving Grade and Credit

Activities on Which Grade/Credit are Based

  1. CWEE Pre-Registration Form: Complete online  
  2. Learning objectives
    1. Draft objectives with work site supervisor  
    2. Meet with CWEE Instructor to finalize and approve  
  3. Student evaluation One copy of the form is included in the original student information packet. Complete and turn in. This form is also available online at the CWEE Web site.  
  4. Employer evaluation (form is mailed directly to employer later in the semester)  
  5. Time cards (2)  
  6. Final Project / Paper completed and submitted on time.
