Daniel Stewart
History Instructor

Pondering my next lecture ...

Ph.D.
With Cabrillo College since 2005

I teach An Introduction to Japanese History (History 19C) in the Fall semester (see my webpage for details) and a hybrid online section of History 2B: World History from 1500 to present (96285) in the Spring semester.

My section of History 2B focuses primarily on the North Pacific Ocean and the expansion of and conflict among imperial powers in that region, including Spain, Britain, Russia, the United States, Japan and China. It is organized by Walter A. McDougall's 1993 book, Let the Sea Make a Noise …, which is, in the author's words, “a novelistic history written … in a spirit of magic.” My course is designed to bring world history “home” to those of us who live along the Ring of Fire, and to emphasize the literary dimensions and contingent nature of “history telling.”
