I am a biologist interested in the natural history, ecology, and evolution of organisms. By training and personal inclination I am a student of the marine invertebrates--I find their life histories and larval development to be particularly fascinating. Honestly, though, I love the marine invertebrates because they are beautifully and amazingly diverse and strange. The rocky intertidal is my home away from home, and you will find me crawling around in tidepools on as many negative low tides as I can.

As a teacher, I believe that I have a responsibility not only to teach students who come through my classroom but to bring scientific knowledge to people who are not biologists or scientists. To this end I use citizen science in my classes and with the public. I also train docents at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, Natural Bridges State Beach, and Seacliff State Beach.
