Elizabeth Flynn
Chemistry Instructor

Casper the Friendly Gator

MS Chemistry, UCSC; BA Chemistry, College of Charleston
With Cabrillo College since 2012

Elizabeth grew up on the faraway island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, 32 miles out to sea. She attended the public school system there until 2004, when she entered the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and managed to earn a B.A. in Chemistry amid all the beaching and beer pong. It was in fact an epiphany that allowed her to decide how to study her favorite subjects: Major in chemistry, and minor in Spanish and psychology! This was a day she will never forget. But Elizabeth wasn’t always a lover of chemistry; that was solely due to an inspiring first-year chemistry instructor.

Remembering this, Elizabeth decided to become a teacher after receiving her M.S. in Chemistry in 2011 from UC Santa Cruz. She started teaching at Cabrillo College in 2012, and never looked back. Every semester she loves her job more, as she learns more ways to promote inclusive, identity-safe classrooms and make chemistry accessible to her students with widely diverse backgrounds and experiences.

When Elizabeth isn’t teaching or preparing, she can be found practicing yoga, eating, cooking before eating, traveling, riding her bike, or finding herself torn between doing a crossword or going for a hike.
