The historian Jill Lepore says that "to study the past is to unlock the prison of the present. The work of the historian is not the work of the critic or of the moralist; it is the work of the sleuth and the storyteller, the philosopher and the scientist, the keeper of tales, the sayer of sooth, the teller of truth."

I hope that my history classes help students to develop a healthy and humble appreciation of what the past can and cannot teach us. I try to teach my students to ask interesting questions of the material we study and to respond to those questions in thoughtful and meaningful ways.

And I want us to have fun while we do that.

A bit about me:

As of 2019-20, I'm working in my 41st year as a teacher, my 23rd here at Cabrillo College.  Before that, I worked at other colleges, especially at UCSD, and taught for many years at the high school level in both Southern California and the Bay Area.  I have taught many courses in History and have also taught courses in English, Writing, Literature, and Film Study.

I am a grandfather of four wonderful offspring of my two wonderful daughters. I love to travel, take walks, play tennis, and impose my musical tastes on my friends and family.

Education:  Ph.D. in United States History from UCSD.  Dissertation: Free Men in Theory: Race, Society, and Politics in Ross County, Ohio, 1796-1850.
M.A. in History from UCSD
B.A. in History from UC Berkeley
