Hello Fall 2018 Students!

Welcome to all of you! I am looking forward to teaching two courses this semester, ECE59: Health, Safety & Nutrition focusing on the principles and practices to promote safe and healthy environments for children in a child care setting. It meets and exceeds the 15-hour health and safety requirement for Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing (Title 22).

A little about myself, I am a mom of (4) adult children in a blended family. I have (2) daughters and (2) sons, along with (3) grandchildren all under the age of three. These are fun and busy times for sure! I have been in education for close to thirty years and have taught and worked closely with many different age groups and in many different diverse settings. I began working with toddlers, and then with preschoolers who had hearing impairments. This is what hooked me into my career working with young children. I started attending Cabrillo College in 1982 and took as many ECE courses that I could, and always knew I would be back to Cabrillo one day.

While obtaining my degree, I taught preschool and in school age enrichment programs, as well as facilitated a wide variety family education activities. I received my B.A. in Social Science & Early Childhood Education, as well as a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential and had the opportunity to teach kindergarten and in 3rd & 4th grade classrooms. I absolutely LOVE these age groups-so fun and so interesting! In 2006, I obtained my M.A. Degree in Educational Supervision & Leadership and received an Administrative Services Credential.

I am very proud to serve as the Director for the Cabrillo College Children's Center & Lab School. The Center is an integral part of the Early Childhood Education Department and College, where children receive a high-quality, safe, developmentally appropriate, socio-economically and culturally diverse early care and education program. The Center offers ECE Students a high-quality “hands-on” laboratory experience in the only standardized workforce training site and non-intrusive observation lab in Santa Cruz County. Students earn their state certification through a practicum and intern experiences with quality mentoring from highly trained Master Teachers. Upon completion our ECE Teachers are employed by the majority of early care and education programs throughout the county and beyond. Cabrillo Children’s Center & Lab School strives to address the high demand for highly skilled and well-trained early care and education teachers, specifically in infant and toddler care through our WestEd PITC (Program for Infant & Toddler Care) Demonstration Site.

I am completely committed to working with young children, families and dedicated teachers. I feel so fortunate to have 30 years in a profession that makes a positive difference every day in the lives of so many!

Wishing you a successful and engaging semester!

The question is not whether we can afford to invest in every child; it is whether we can afford not to.
