Mark Stanford, PhD

With Cabrillo College since 2014

First my professional background and experience. I retired in 2015 from a great and rewarding career with the Santa Clara County Department of Behavioral Health where I was the Director of Addiction Medicine and Behavioral Therapy services. I was also a counseling therapist specializing in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders at the Psychiatric Medical Group in San Jose California for many years. As an educator, I have taught various psychology and clinical courses at all levels of higher education for over 25 years. This includes Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry; San Jose State University Graduate School of Social Work; UC Berkeley Extension, San Mateo Community College and now, Cabrillo College.

Next, my personal background. I’m married and helped raise 3 children who all went through their schooling here in Santa Cruz. I am blessed to have my family near me where we are active in each other’s lives. A fun fact many do not know about me is that in college, I was a semi-professional musician and had the honor of performing with several internationally famous jazz recording artists when they came to the Bay Area. I learned early on that touring the country most days of the year was not for me!!

My deep interest in psychology and behavior was motivated by a curiosity and concern about the growing prevalence of addictions, depression and anxiety in the United States. My questions about these behaviors would only get answered through my education and ultimately through my clinical practice and professional network of some of the nation’s best and brightest in the field of psychology and neuroscience.

My career in psychology and education has evolved to where my love for teaching and sharing with students is now a main focus. I place an importance on bringing life into the academic studies and the learning experience by including actual case examples from my work. I am an avid fan of having fun while learning and where education can be a springboard into realizing one’s great potential!

If you too are curious about the often-touchy, if not poorly understood, subject areas of Abnormal Psychology; Death, Dying and Bereavement; or the Pharmacology of substance use and mental health conditions, I hope to see you soon in one of my classes! You’ll love it!
