B.A. English Education, M.A. Journalism & Communication

Andrea Patton grew up in Salinas, California. Aspiring to better understand the world and her role in it, she traveled throughout the U.S. eventually landing in West Virginia where she attended West Liberty University and earned a bachelor's degree in English Education.

Andrea went on to teach public high school for 15 years in Columbus, Ohio. She studied journalism and communication at The Ohio State University where she earned her master's degree while teaching full time. In 2015, she and a student from her AP English class were selected as Bezos Scholars and attended the Aspen Ideas Festival. Inspired by the focus on social justice, especially by Clifton Kinnie, a youth activist from Ferguson who spent time with the group of young leaders in the Bezos Scholars Program, Andrea and her student returned to Columbus to produce a social justice festival called Just Columbus.

Andrea is a contributor to Good Times Santa Cruz, and an active member of Sanctuary Santa Cruz, where she volunteers with other documentary film makers to capture stories of the immigrant community.
