Rachel K Mitchell
B.A. Anthropology UCSC; M.A. Anthropology University of Kentucky
With Cabrillo College since 2002
My interest in anthropology began right here at Cabrillo College! I am honored and thrilled to now be teaching about this exciting, dynamic, and ever so relevant field. My primary interests are in applied anthropology including student service learning in the community. I currently teach Biological Anthropology and the Bio Anthro lab class at the Watsonville campus and Food & Culture in Global Perspective in Aptos in the evenings. My interests in these areas include genetic research and applications and how it relates to health and well being. My past research experience was related to the cultural construction of childbirth practices and social and agrarian change in southern Baja California, Mexico where I have lived and done research off and on over the past 20 years.
I am also involved in high school outreach and encouraging high school students to take advantage of concurrent enrollment opportunities at Cabrillo. Anthropology courses are an excellent option for high school students and I welcome them in all of my classes.
