TERRY HOFF: Painted Ultra-Space, showcases the artist’s dynamic paintings of odd, yet appealing figures floating in layers of deep abstract space. Hoff opens a darkly humorous window into the subliminal conflicts lurking beneath the glossy surface of American Pop Culture, as if inviting us into the subconscious mindscapes of someone who grew up under the influence of too much TV and advertising. His paintings have a “strange beauty” that is at once alluring and unsettling. His candy-colored visions depict vaguely familiar snippets of imagery that are seemingly stuck in disorienting layers of fractured space. To create this complex sense of space, Hoff uses a unique combination of materials – acrylic paints and mediums, spray paint, airbrush, house paint, and epoxy resin – layered and collaged with paper, fabric and “decals” made of paint.
