  What is MESA?

MESA stands for Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement. It is a program that began in 1970 to nurture minority students for careers in Math and Science. Originally developed as a partnership between an Oakland high school and UC Berkeley's School of Engineering, MESA has grown to over 65 centers across the state, serving students of all ages.

MESA has a presence in the high schools and middle schools through the MESA Schools Program (MSP), at about a thirds of California's community colleges with the MESA Community College Program (MCCCP); and at some four year colleges and universities through the MESA Engineering Program (MEP). Since it was developed in California, MESA has been replicated in many other states.

The community college MESAprogram provides academic support for educationally disadvantaged students interested in math, science or engineering so they can transfer to four-year institutions and successfully attain math-based degrees. Components of the program include:

  • Study Center
  • Academic, career and financial aid advising
  • Transfer assistance
  • Orientation courses
  • Organized group study
  • Field trips
  • Career development
  • Summer enrichment programs

Funding has historically come from the state of California and private industry in about a 3:2 ratio
