Newspaper publisher donates 50K to journalism program
Newspaper publisher and local philanthropist Rowland Rebele donated $50,000 in 2006 to support journalism training, education, and paid internships for Cabrillo journalism students. Last March, part of that funding paid for ten students to attend the three day state-wide JACC (Journalism Association of Community Colleges) newspaper conference and competition held in Sacramento. It also funded a $2,000 paid internship for Todd Guild as a reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Todd's internship was one key part of the education and training he received at Cabrillo which led to his landing this summer a full time job as a reporter for the Watsonville Register Pajaronian.
Broadcast journalism students complete second TV news show
Coming up in September, look for Community TV to air the second episode of Cabrillo College News, a 45 minute television news show produced by Cabrillo journalism students in partnership with Community TV of Santa Cruz. The second show features a studio interview with Bill Lovejoy, thirty year veteran photojournalist of the Santa Cruz Sentinel. News coverage includes footage of the new Scotts Valley campus.
Staffers of college newspaper dive into podcast show production
Last semester through grant and instructional equipment monies, staffers of The Voice got their hands on multimedia equipment for producing vod and podcasts. The equipment includes quality microphones, Sony headsets, two USB mixing boards, Final Cut Studio, mike stands, and two Apple MacBook Pro laptops. Forays into podcasting included the launching of Cabrillo Newsmakers, a "Meet-the-Press" style interview show. Multimedia editor Gabriel Bentley worked the equipment as Newsmakers show host Alex McCauley interviewed President Brian King in his office about the selection of Cabrillo's new Vice President of Student Services, Dr. May Kuaichi Chen. This semester, staffers of The Voice will continue pod and vodcast production.
Voice staffers provide video and audio coverage of campus events
Individuals and programs across campus are requesting that journalism students record and make available to the college community audio and video of major college events. In Spring '07 at the request of the President's Office, Voice multimedia editor Gabriel Bentley, news videographer Mark, and Voice adviser David Sheftman filmed the two forums introducing the finalists for the VP of Student Services position and uploaded the video to the college network for viewing. This Flex Week, Sheftman worked with Theater Arts instructor Sarah Albertson to produce and distribute over the web a podcast of the address by Dr. Stephen Zunes on "Current Issues in the Middle East". Individuals and groups looking for video and audio events coverage should contact Sheftman at 477-5652.
