Hi! I look forward to meeting you either in the Integrated Learning Center or in one of my English classes.
I grew up in San Jose, where I learned about the transformative power of education and the stories that connect us. My parents, the first in their families to attend college, instilled in me the value of learning. I studied English and Spanish Literature at Stanford, falling in love with language as a beautiful site of resistance—its power to reclaim narratives, code-shift across borders, and shape identities both inherited and chosen. I also fell love with teaching and tutoring--a love that has transformed into a lifelong career that includes teaching for AmeriCorps, UC Santa Cruz, De Anza College, Cabrillo College, and for the California State Parks system.
I earned my master’s and Ph.D. in American Literature and Studies at UC Santa Cruz with a focus in teaching college composition, where I discovered my true calling: teaching. At UCSC, I coordinated a support program for students at risk of dropping out, training peer mentors and tutors to ensure every voice had the tools to succeed. To me, language is more than just words—it’s a means of expression, a voice that cannot be silenced. As bell hooks wrote, "Teaching is the practice of freedom," and that has been my guiding principle.
In 2001, I joined Cabrillo College as one of the first faculty members at the newly opened Watsonville Center Building A, a place I cherish for its vibrant community and commitment to equity. At Cabrillo, I’ve been a professor, mentor, and student advocate, serving on advisory committees, the Faculty Senate, Basic Needs advisory groups, and veterans’ support programs—always with a focus on opening doors and keeping them open.
Outside the classroom, I’m a mother to two amazing daughters, a dog lover, and deeply passionate about Santa Cruz’s culture and nature. I volunteer as a docent at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and work front-of-house at Santa Cruz Shakespeare, where stories come to life.
I believe education changes lives, and writing is a key part of our collective future beyond oppressive structures.

¡Hola! Estoy emocionada de conocerte, ya sea en el Centro Integrado de Aprendizaje (ILC) o en alguna de mis clases de inglés.
Crecí en San José, donde descubrí el poder transformador de la educación y las historias que nos unen. Mis padres, los primeros en sus familias en asistir a la universidad, me inculcaron el valor del aprendizaje. Estudié Literatura Inglesa y Española en Stanford, donde me enamoré del lenguaje como espacio de resistencia: su poder para reclamar narrativas, navegar entre códigos culturales y moldear identidades tanto heredadas como elegidas. También descubrí mi pasión por la enseñanza y la tutoría, un amor que se convirtió en mi vocación de vida.
Obtuve mi maestría y doctorado en Literatura y Estudios Americanos en UC Santa Cruz, donde encontré mi verdadero propósito: enseñar como acto de empoderamiento. Allí coordiné un programa de apoyo para estudiantes en riesgo de abandonar sus estudios, capacitando a mentores y tutores para asegurar que cada voz tuviera las herramientas para triunfar. Para mí, el lenguaje trasciende las palabras: es expresión pura, una voz que no puede ser silenciada. Como escribió bell hooks, "Enseñar es practicar la libertad", principio que ha guiado mi carrera.
En 2001, me uní a Cabrillo College como una de las primeras profesoras del recién inaugurado Edificio A del Centro de Watsonville, un lugar que atesoro por su comunidad vibrante y compromiso con la equidad. En Cabrillo, he sido profesora, mentora y defensora de estudiantes, participando en comités asesores, el Senado Académico y programas de apoyo a veteranos, siempre con el objetivo de abrir puertas... y mantenerlas abiertas.
Fuera del aula, soy madre de dos hijas maravillosas, amante de los perros y apasionada de la cultura y naturaleza de Santa Cruz. Soy voluntaria como guía en el Parque Estatal Henry Cowell Redwoods y trabajo en Santa Cruz Shakespeare, donde las historias cobran vida.
Porque creo que la educación transforma vidas, y la escritura es clave para construir futuros colectivos libres de estructuras opresoras.
