Degrees and Certificates

Degrees
General Horticulture & Crop Production Associate of Science
The Associate in Science in General Horticulture and Crop Production prepares students for a fast-paced career producing ornamental and edible plants in greenhouses, nurseries, vertical farms, and in-ground organic farms. Students gain hands-on experience in the following: plant propagation, formulating and evaluating artificial media, fertilizer solutions, tracking growth, monitoring for pests, and observing the environmental conditions that influence plant growth.
Landscape Horticulture Associate of Science
The Associate in Science in Landscape Horticulture prepares students to become good horticulturists through the understanding of site-appropriate plant selection, correct plant identification, proper maintenance and pruning techniques, and the relationship between irrigation and the soil. Students will incorporate these skills into developing sustainable and aesthetically pleasing urban spaces, parks, and commercial and residential landscapes.
Sustainable Agriculture Technology Associate of Science
The Associate in Science in Sustainable Agriculture Technology gives students a core horticulture and plant science curriculum and also develops their skills in a broad range of agriculture technology topics including: data management, GIS mapping, networking technology tools on farm, producing plants in nutrient film technique, deep raft, ebb and flood, and substrate hydroponic production systems, electrical and hydraulic engineering basics, soil moisture sensing, energy and water conservation, and computer science. Upon completion, students will be prepared for emerging careers at the nexus of agriculture, technology, and sustainable food production including roles as precision agriculture technicians, greenhouse managers, hydroponic growers, farmers, ranch or operations managers, and others.
This program is designed for those wishing to go directly into employment in the agriculture and horticulture industries; therefore, students wishing to transfer to a Bachelor's degree should consult a counselor or consider the AS-T degree in Agriculture Plant Science.
Agriculture Plant Science Associate of Science - Transfer
The Associate in Science in Agriculture Plant Science for Transfer (A.S.-T in Agriculture Plant Science) is intended for students who plan to transfer and complete a bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a similar major at a CSU campus (similar majors at CSU Monterey Bay, CSU Chico, CSU Cal Poly Pomona, and CSU Stanislaus). The horticulture program prepares students for entry level management jobs and self-employment in diverse horticulture businesses, as well as prepares students to transfer to the CSU to pursue baccalaureate degrees in agriculture, agriculture and environmental plant sciences, agricultural education, and sustainable agriculture. Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic plant science, soil and soil testing, integrated pest management, evaluating the cost of production using different production techniques, and developing crop production plans for various crops. Careers related to this field include ornamental and edible crop production and landscape horticulture. The program also provides a foundation for students in ornamental horticulture and landscape architecture, and affords local horticulturists and working professionals the means to upgrade their skills and knowledge. Opportunities to obtain valuable experience are provided in the greenhouse/farm facility and by working to enhance campus landscapes. Students completing the Associate in Science in Agriculture Plant Science for Transfer (A.S.-T in Agriculture Plant Science) are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major.
Agriculture Business Associate in Science - Transfer
The Associate of Science in Agriculture Business for Transfer (A.S.-T in Agriculture Business) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. The degree provides students with a study of key agribusiness concepts. Students start their business training in computer applications, communications, and economics courses to prepare for careers in agriculture such as farm management, logistics, marketing of agricultural products, sales, and services. Agriculture business majors will be able to apply the concepts, principles, and terminology of business, including management, finance, and marketing, to real-world issues and opportunities in the agricultural and life sciences industries. Students completing the Associate in Science in Agricultural Business for Transfer (A.S.-T in Agricultural Business) are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. This degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system.
