Success Stories

Tony Nuñez

Santa Cruz Good Times news editor Tony Nuñez credits the Journalism program for preparing him for his successful career at local newspapers. He began with the mass media course and “fell in love with journalism due to Brad’s electric personality and stories about the field.” As Tony had always been interested in national sports coverage, he started to see a terrific opportunity in sports journalism.

One of Tony’s first assignments was covering the Santa Cruz Warriors training camp, and he found the experience invaluable. He learned through the experience that this path was right for him. Through the program, he was connected with local sports writers.

“You can’t beat the experience of getting to know the local community when you’re just starting out,” says Tony.

During his time at Cabrillo, Tony made a great group of friends in the program, mostly due to the late nights putting out the Cabrillo Voice. Many of these friends have gone on to find success in their fields.

Tony was the sports editor at the Pajaronian until 2018 when he became managing editor. When the Weeklys News Group purchased the paper, he became the news editor of the Good Times. Tony appreciates that this position has opened up opportunities in the community for him, such as joining the Board of Directors of the Pajaro Valley Healthcare District.
