About the Ombuds

In simple terms, an Ombuds is someone people can talk to when they are experiencing a challenge, conflict, concern, frustration, or difficult situation at work or on campus. The Ombuds serves as a confidential, independent, impartial, informal, and voluntary resource who helps individuals think through issues before they escalate.

One of the most important things to know is that the Ombuds is independent. The Ombuds is not part of Human Resources, Student Services, Academic Affairs, administration, or any other department at Cabrillo College. Because the Ombuds has no stake in the outcome of a situation and does not take sides, visitors are provided with a trusted space to speak openly and honestly about their experiences.

Many people do not need someone to solve their problem. They simply need someone who will listen, ask thoughtful questions, help organize their thinking, and explore possible options. Often, having the opportunity to talk through a concern with someone who has no agenda can provide clarity and confidence.

The Ombuds Office does not conduct investigations, make decisions, determine right or wrong, or direct people on what they should do. Instead, the Ombuds helps individuals better understand their situation, identify available resources, improve communication, prepare for difficult conversations, and consider possible paths forward.
