Fill out the "Student Change of Information" in Self-Service eTrieve

Changing your Display name in Canvas is not possible within Canvas. If you make the change in Canvas, the name will be automatically reverted to the name that is in Colleague/Self-Service. To permanently update you name in Canvas, please use the "Student Change of Information" form in eTrieve, and check the "Chosen Name" option. After you fill out and submit this form, you will receive an email confirmation that your request has been approved, and after about 24 hours the change will be updated in Canvas.

  1. Open the Canvas page you want to keep.

  2. In your browser, open the menu (look for File or the three dots/lines in the top corner).

  3. Select Print.

  4. In the print window, choose:

  • Your printer → to make a paper copy

  • Save as PDF → to create a digital copy

Tip: Saving as a PDF is a great way to keep instructions or assignments handy even when you’re offline.

Need more Canvas Storage?

Students taking many media-heavy courses may run out of Canvas storage space. Each user has 200 MB. Canvas files should not be a place to store media.

If this happens, here are instructions to embed images into discussions that do not count towards user quotas.

Alternatively, it would be best for you to store your media in Canvas Studio which is integrated into all courses and/or Google Drive. If you need a Google account, you can get a Cabrillo email account that is connected to Google.

Need help brainstorming other storage options? Contact the CTC (ctc@cabrillo.edu).

How to post and embed a photo in Canvas Discussion from Student Google Drive

Given that there are user quotes (limits) to storage for files in Canvas, these instructions are a great option to embed heavy content such as photos into a discussion post.

First, Student Activates Cabrillo Google Account: Setup Cabrillo Student Gmail & Google Suite Access: 7-Digital-Student-ID@student.cabrillo.edu

  1. Second, Upload photos from computer to Google Drive. In some cases, your instructor may have instructions for you on the folder they would like you to use for your submissions.

  2. Next, upload or drag and drop jpeg photos to this New Folder. (HEIC to JPEG Conversion if from phone)

  3. Then, go to Canvas Discussion, press Reply button to make a post. Next, in the toolbar, click the App icon (looks like a plug) > choose View All or Google Apps. Select Google Drive.

  4. Click Authorize, Allow, and Allow until you see your Google Drive Folders. Now, locate your Photo Folder in your Google Drive and select one or more images (hold down CONTROL to select multiple images) you want to embed in Discussion. Then click "Select" and then "Add."

  5. You will see your images(s) in your Discussion post, and click the Post Reply button.
