Tools For Academic Integrity

The TLC supports two tools for academic integrity:

  1. Turnitin

  2. Respondus

Turnitin and Respondus are integrated with Canvas. Turnitin is a tool for preventing plagiarism and Respondus prevents cheating during online exams or quizzes.

Turnitin

Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention system that makes it easy for students to verify papers against unoriginal work. Design for honesty, not punishment. Turnitin is built into Canvas, so you can access it from your course shells.

Turnitin FAQs

To get started with adding Turnitin to your Canvas assignments, follow the steps outlined in this resource.

Check for plagiarism using Turnitin's Similarity Report within Canvas. To access the report, follow the steps listed in this resource.

If your students require help with Turnitin, please refer them to Turnitin's Student Hub.

If you are looking for more resources on how to use Turnitin, refer to Turnitin's help documentation. You can also reach out to the TLC for support in person or via Zoom.

If you are experiencing trouble with Turnitin and need to contact them directly, please submit a request with their support team.

Respondus Lockdown Browser

LockDown Browser "locks down" the browser on a computer or tablet. Students are unable to copy, print, access other applications, or visit other websites during an online exam. LockDown Browser also blocks hundreds of common and advanced methods of digital cheating, such as the use of Virtual Machines, remote desktops, screen-sharing, instant messaging, screen recording, keystroke combinations, launching applications with timers/alerts, and browser cache exploits.

Important Information For Instructors

Instructors should always create a pre-quiz to test LockDown Browser before they attempt a real exam/quiz. Students have all different kinds of devices and we don’t have control how student own devices work. Students should reach out to the CTC if they are having trouble accessing Respondus Lockdown Browser.

If an instructor sets up Lockdown Browser on a quiz, there are settings that need to be checked to allow a student to use an iPad or a Chromebook*. This is on a quiz by quiz basis, so would need to be checked each time. There is a difference in how students access Lockdown browser based on whether the quiz is a "Classic" quiz or a New quiz. If it's a New quiz, Lockdown Browser will launch automatically. But if it's an "Old" quiz, the student would need to launch Lockdown Browser manually.

This comprehensive training webinar is intended for instructors who plan to use LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor for online exams. Note: Cabrillo does not use Monitor, but the information on LockDown Browser is still useful The session provides a detailed demonstration of both applications.
