Common Course Numbering (CCN)

Frequently Asked Questions

The California Community College system is implementing a Common Course Numbering (CCN) system to make transferring easier. Under Assembly Bill 1111 (Berman), courses with the same content will have the same number across all community colleges in California.

The Common Course Numbering project aims to streamline the transfer process for students across California. By making some of the common courses align with the same number and title, students can better navigate the transfer process from one college to another.

CCN courses are easy to spot! They have a "C" in the catalog number, for example, ENGL 1A is now ENGL C1000. Keep scrolling to see a list of impacted courses and their former and new names.

Courses have been grouped into three phases, with the most common courses in the first phase with an effective date of Fall 2025. Future academic years will include a growing number of courses going through this process.

Courses taken in a past semester under the previous course name should still transfer and fulfill graduation requirements due to Catalog Rights.

Check with an Academic Counselor to review your specific graduation and/or transfer goals.

Cal-GETC

Frequently Asked Questions

Beginning Fall 2025, Cabrillo College, along with all other California Community Colleges, will implement a singular transfer general education pathway for students known as the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC).

The Cal-GETC pattern will be recognized by both the California State University (CSU) and the University of California (UC) systems. This implementation is part of a statewide initiative within the California Community College (CCC) system in response to the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act of 2021, Assembly Bill 928.

Yes, starting Fall 2025, only a student with catalog rights can utilize their CSU GE Breadth or IGETC pattern towards certificate and degree completion and/or towards GE certification for transfer.

Students who have not maintained continuous enrollment and have lost catalog rights must use the Cal-GETC pattern beginning Fall 2025.

Cal-GETC applies to:

  • New incoming students who begin their enrollment at Cabrillo College in Fall 2025 and thereafter.

  • Students with external credits from the University of California (UC), in-state private/independent universities, and out-of-state universities with no claim to Cabrillo College catalog rights.

  • Returning students who have not maintained continuous enrollment at Cabrillo College prior to Fall semester 2025 and have lost catalog rights.

US History, Constitution, and American Ideals Requirement is not required for completion of Cal-GETC.

  • However, for students pursuing transfer to a CSU institution, an approved GE course focused on US History, Constitution, and American Ideals is a CSU graduation requirement.

The Language Other Than English (LOTE) requirement was previously part of the IGETC general education pattern. However, due to the realignment of general education requirements under AB 928, LOTE is now only a graduation requirement for the University of California (UC).

Students seeking UC transferability who have not fulfilled the LOTE requirement through high school coursework, an AP exam, or other UC-approved criteria may still meet this UC graduation requirement by enrolling in an approved Language Other Than English course.

No, only a full certification of general education (GE) is available with Cal-GETC.

This is a change from how students could use the IGETC pattern, which offered partial certification, or the CSU GE Breadth pattern, which offered a partial certification.

  • No, courses for Cal-GETC must be passed with a minimum grade of “C,” where a “C” grade is defined as a 2.0 on a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) scale.

  • A “Credit” or “Pass” grade is acceptable, provided that it is equivalent to a grade of “C” or higher. A college transcript must reflect this policy.

  • The Golden 4 (Cal-GETC GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C, and 2) courses should only be taken with a letter grade and should not be taken Pass/No Pass.

General Education Worksheets can be found on the Cabrillo General Education website.
