Professional and Personal Characteristics of Our Next Superintendent/President

In the spring of 2025, Cabrillo College sent out a survey to employees, students, and community members asking for their feedback before beginning the search for a new Superintendent/President. Respondents answered questions about the top traits they wanted to see in the new Superintendent/President, as well as the most significant opportunities and challenges the Superintendent/President would face in their first year.

Key areas of focus include the following:

Build stronger, authentic relationships across Santa Cruz County, especially with underserved populations, community leaders, and local organizations. Expanding outreach, attending community events, and collaborating with Native communities will foster trust and visibility. Strengthening partnerships with institutions such as University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) CSUMB, Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD)/K–12, and local employers will enhance general and dual enrollment, workforce pathways, and Cabrillo’s regional presence.

Expand Cabrillo’s workforce development role by aligning its Career Education programs with local labor market demands. Increase short-term certificates, non-credit offerings, and work-based learning opportunities in career education disciplines including agriculture, healthcare, and technology. Re-engage adult learners and partner with local industries to drive enrollment growth and amplify regional economic impact.

The next Superintendent/President will lead with transparency and actively engage campus constituents - addressing systemic challenges, fostering collaboration, respecting campus culture, and creating a unified, growth-oriented work environment that reinforces trust and boosts morale - by actively listening, and promoting shared governance through inclusive decision-making.

Expand student support services by increasing access to mental health care, academic advising, tutoring, foundational skills, basic needs, such as housing insecurity, food access, and transportation, and career resources.

The Superintendent/President will advocate for social justice, belonging, and educational access, therefore fostering a unified and inclusive campus community. Cabrillo’s Hispanic-Serving Institution designation is a foundational achievement that is deeply meaningful to our work. The Superintendent/President will reflect this core value through support of culturally responsive teaching, equitable hiring, and development of the Watsonville Center.

The Cabrillo College and UCSC joint student housing project on Cabrillo's campus is currently planned to break ground in fall 2025 with an opening slated for fall 2027. The state-of-the-art, 624-bed project will transform the Aptos campus, increasing access and retention for low income and housing insecure students. The Superintendent/President will continue to lead this effort with inclusive planning and equitable management while using this initiative to enhance the overall student experience and to strengthen Cabrillo's role in the community.

The next Superintendent/President will demonstrate fiscal leadership, advocate for fair funding at the state level, and build trust through clear, consistent communication about the college’s financial position, with the intent of providing safeguards for core academic programs, student services, and equity initiatives.

Our next leader will continue driving the change towards infrastructure improvements, enhancing campus safety, and modernizing classrooms and labs to maintain the quality of our programs. They will build upon current efforts to address technology access gaps, especially for low-income and rural students, as well as outdated labs and limited access to modern technology in order to support quality instruction and ensure effective campus operations.
