Music Technology and Recording Arts

Who We Are

The Music Technology and Recording Arts program is dedicated to providing Cabrillo students with the opportunities and skills they need to succeed in the music industry. It emphasizes a comprehensive, well-rounded education by requiring instruction in music performance and theory in addition to music technology.

Cabrillo’s music facilities feature state-of-the-art equipment. All studios are equipped with cutting-edge Apollo interfaces from Universal Audio, iMac computers, the latest software, and more to ensure that students are up to date and professionally experienced.

MTRA students can also pursue internship opportunities during their course of study. The program proudly partners with Kuumbwa Jazz Center, InDigital Studios, and Cabrillo Stage to give students opportunities to learn and excel outside the classroom.

What We Offer

The Music Technology and Recording Arts program offers both an Associate in Science Degree (AS) and a Career Technology Education (CET) Certificate of Achievement. These are designed for students whose goal is a career in the music industry. MTRA has over 50 courses that provide students with a well-rounded skillset, including recording, producing, digital audio, publication, working with MIDI, composing, live sound, and engineering. Other subjects include pre- and post-production, tracking, editing, mixing, effects processing, use of plug-ins, and the mastering of live or studio-generated music.

More broadly, through MTRA curriculum and internships, students gain experience with the behavior of sound, hardware, software, and the music skills used in professional recording environments.

Graduates of the program will be ready to immediately pursue careers in sound engineering, performance, electronic music composition, sound design, music arranging, songwriting, broadcast engineering, and equipment manufacturing.

Students interested in transferring should consult with a counselor to secure a smooth transition into the program.

This program has amazing tools that much larger colleges don’t even have. It’s been great to have their students come intern with us, and then to see them move onto rewarding careers in the field.
