MTRA offers an Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree and three Certificates of Achievement, as well as four new non-credit certificates. All courses are designed to give students the skills they need to pursue a wide range of music careers, such as sound design, music composition, audio engineering, live sound engineering, and music production.

Experiment! The certificates are easy to obtain with as little as 16.5 units - and if you decide you like it, you can progress to an A.S. Degree.

Music Technology & Recording Arts A.S. Degree

The Associate in Science in Music Technology and Recording Arts will prepare you for a career in the music industry. The course of study covers all aspects of music technology including recording, production, engineering, digital audio, musical instrument digital interface (MIDI), sequencing, virtual instruments, electronic music, composition, live sound, synthesis and sampling, digital audio workstations, editing, mixing, mastering, and music and audio for tv, film, and video games. If you wish to become and entrepreneur or to go directly into employment in the music industry in careers such as audio engineering, music composition, music production, sound design, arranging, songwriting, broadcast engineering, live sound engineering, and music and audio for tv, film and video games, this is the degree for you. The degree requires 60 units.

Digital Music Production Certificate of Achievement

This certificate of achievement is designed for students who would like to learn to produce music professionally using a digital audio workstation (DAW). It provides the foundation to join the workforce in entry level jobs such as music producer, production assistant, music licensing, commercial music production, or to continue to an associate’s degree. The certificate requires 16.5 units.

Audio Recording and Mixing Certificate of Achievement

This certificate of achievement is designed for students who would like to pursue careers in audio production, engineering, studio recording, live sound, editing, mixing, and/or mastering. It provides the foundation to join the workforce in entry level jobs such as audio recording engineer, audio editor, audio mixing engineer, live sound engineer, audio producer, or to continue to an associate’s degree. The certificate requires 16.5 units.

Game Audio Production Certificate of Achievement

This certificate of achievement is designed for students who would like to learn audio and music production techniques for interactive video games. It provides the foundation to join the workforce in jobs such as sound designer, audio designer, technical sound designer, composer, or to continue to an associate’s degree. The certificate requires 16.5 units.

Non-Credit Certificates

Game Audio Production Certificate of Completion

This certificate of completion is a non-credit certificate designed to introduce techniques of audio production for video games. It prepares students for job opportunities in Audio/Sound Design and Technical Sound Design.

Digital Music Production Certificate of Completion

This certificate of completion is a non-credit certificate designed to introduce students to music production techniques. It prepares students for job opportunities in Music Production and Audio Production.

Audio Recording and Mixing Certificate of Completion

This certificate of completion is a non-credit certificate designed to introduce techniques of audio recording and mixing. It prepares students for job opportunities in Audio Engineering, Editing, Mixing, and Post-Production.

Podcasting Certificate of Completion

This certificate of completion is a noncredit certificate designed to prepare students to begin writing and producing podcasts utilizing a digital audio workstation (DAW). Upon completion, students will be able to create podcasts for current employers, apply for entry level jobs in broadcasting and audio technology, and start their own podcasting series.

Internships

MTRA students can also pursue internship opportunities during their course of study. The program proudly partners with local venues including Kuumbwa Jazz Center and Cabrillo Stage to give students opportunities to learn and excel outside the classroom.
