MTRA offers an Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree and 2 Certificates of Achievement. All courses are designed to give students the skills they need to pursue a wide range of music careers, such as sound design, music composition, audio engineering, live sound engineering, and music production.

Music Technology & Recording Arts A.S. Degree

The Associate in Science (AS) degree requires:

  • 15 units of Core MTRA courses (MUS 31A and B, 31LS, 31TS, 31SP, 57A and B, 57NS, 7)

  • 18 units of General Education courses

  • 10 units of required Music courses

  • 2 units of Music Performance electives

  • 2 units of Music Applied electives

  • 3 units of Music electives

  • 6 units of approved outside electives

  • 2 units of Special Studies

  • 2 units of Career Work Experience

These courses provide instruction in a wide array of skills, such as live sound production, studio production, and recording techniques. Students can choose from a wide variety of music performance classes and instrument lessons, as well as diverse outside electives in business, video production, physics, or theater. The entire course of study amounts to a total of 60 units.

Music Technology & Recording Arts Skills Certificate

The Skills Certificate requires:

  • 6-7.5 units of Core MTRA courses (MUS 31A and B, 31LS, 31TS, 31SP, 57A and B, 57NS, 7)

  • 6 units of required Music courses (MUS 5/6, MUS 28, MUS 51A)

We studied the theory of how sound works, the signal flow of using microphones and getting the best performances out of bands that you're trying to record — it was nice that Cabrillo gave us the opportunity to spend that much time in the studio to record and to actually get hands-on experience.
