Meet Some of Our Counselors and Staff

My name is Eva Acosta. It’s been a joy working as a Bilingual/Bicultural Counselor at Cabrillo College for 30 years both as a full time and a part time counselor. A majority of my time at Cabrillo has been at the Watsonville Center, where I’ve had the pleasure of working with all types of students, including 1st generation college students. My goal is to help students navigate the many college pathways available. I especially enjoy working with students that are interested in teaching and health careers. I invite you to make an appointment to meet with me to plan how to achieve your educational goals.

-Eva Acosta, Cabrillo Counselor

-Rosie Rocha, Transfer Center Student Services Assistant

Welcome to Cabrillo! I work in the Academic Counseling office, and I am here to assist you. Stop by to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions.

-Jasmin Castillo-Vallencia, Program Specialist

My goal is that each student I work with feels supported, understood, cared for, and empowered. I have been a Counselor at Cabrillo College since 2016. In that time, I have worked with the general student population, as well as as provided counseling in the STEM Center and in Guardian Scholars. I look forward to meeting with you in any of these locations.

-Lauren Cole, Cabrillo Counselor

In my 20+ years as an academic counselor at Cabrillo, I have loved working with the full spectrum of community college students. I've worked extensively with students pursuing Cabrillo's allied health programs, transfer students of all majors, STEM students, and of course with music students. Most recently I've added counseling hours in our Veteran's Information Center, helping to serve those who have served. I look forward to meeting you!

-Jay Jackson, Cabrillo Counselor

Cabrillo is an outstanding place to learn and explore. Wherever you are on your academic journey, you'll enjoy being part of this dynamic college environment. I'm proud to be a member of the team of counselors helping you to navigate your academic and career pathways. Let us know how we can help...see you at Cabrillo."

-Zach Joseph, Cabrillo Counselor

I currently work part-time as a General Counselor (Bilingual), serving the general student population in their counseling needs, as well as Counselor/Coordinator for both the STARS and Puente Learning Communities. I have worked at Cabrillo College for six years but have worked for the community college system since 2008. I am passionate about helping students realizing and reaching their goals. I also teach two CG-51 Planning for Success sections each Fall. I look forward to working with you!

-Michelle Foguet Mendoza, Counselor

I feel that it’s a privilege to work with students. I have been teaching and counseling for the past 23 years and look forward to the daily interactions I have with students. I am proud of the working relationships that I am able to create and maintain and look forward to meeting you!

Hello, my name is Motoko Nakazawa-Hewitt and I am originally from Tokyo, Japan. I have been working at Cabrillo College since 2016. I have worked at community colleges in Oregon, Washington, and California - and I’m drawn to this part of the West Coast. I love working with students at Cabrillo College, helping them navigate the complicated educational system, and celebrating every graduation. We help students in lots of different ways. If you have any questions, please come and visit us in the 100 building, and discover how we can help you.

- Motoko Nakazawa-Hewitt, Counselor

I am bilingual with an academic background in Psychology and Social Work with 8+ years of direct counseling/therapeutic industry experience serving children, teens, adults, families, and those with developmental disabilities in the Bay Area.  I am always seeking creative practices and utilizing behavioral science to inspire people to tap into the best version of themselves.

-Brenda Ochoa, Counselor

My name is Christina Ortega. I have been with Cabrillo College since 2016 as an Academic Counselor and instructor. I am a first generation college student. When I began college my major was Business, because that is what my family advised what would be best for me. I found myself unhappy and unsatisfied in my courses. Through self exploration and a few more semesters, I found a passion for counseling and psychology. I graduated from Fresno State with a BA in Psychology and MS in Counseling with an emphasis in Student Services. Go Bulldogs! Going through my graduate program I was preparing to be a K-12 counselor, but I am so glad that my journey brought me to the community college.

-Christina Ortega, Cabrillo Counselor

As a first generation college student and someone who had to work to put themselves through school, I know some of the struggles that students experience.  I work hard to ensure that I explain the college process in the simplest terms so that students don’t feel overwhelmed.

I work with a fantastic team at the Watsonville Center that is always ready and happy to help students.  I know how important it is for our students to be successful; come learn how I can help you break down the barriers higher education might pose.  I stand ready to work hard and help you become the next Cabrillo College graduate!

-Rudy Puente, Cabrillo Counselor

-Casey Shannon, Cabrillo Counselor and CG Instructor

As a general academic counselor I have the privilege of working with all students. I am also a designated ECE and financial aid liaison. I'd be happy to talk to you about your future goals. You can find me at the Watsonville center and main campus. I look forward to working with you.

-Denyss Vela, Counselor

Every day I get to meet true heroes. I get to know people who are determined to make their lives better. Some students are defying situations that, at least for a while, made them believe they would never lead happy lives. And what I love about my job is that I get to help them do just that.

-Marcie Wald, Counselor

As a former Cabrillo student, I love working with our community. Cabrillo offers so many opportunities to students, whether they want to obtain a certificate or degree, transfer to a university, or just take some classes for their own personal enjoyment. I work with all types of students at Cabrillo, and I also work specifically with international students, as I immigrated to the U.S. from Poland when I was young. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to come and see us!

-Anna Zagorska, Cabrillo Counselor
